How to Style the Army Jacket

The army jacket may seem like a difficult piece to pull off. However, with some easy pointers in mind, it can become your new go-to for instantly cool casual outfits.

Tip #1: We like to think of the army jacket as an outfit “elevator” – it elevates an otherwise simple outfit to one with dimension and character. So, you want keep the rest of your look somewhat understated. Less is more with statement pieces.

In the following photos, I threw my army jacket over a black dress, paired with my favorite booties and bag.

Tip #2: Have you guys heard of the “third-piece” rule? It is a simple and effective approach to getting dressed. When putting an outfit together, try to incorporate a minimum of three pieces, not counting your shoes. We can usually easily think of two pieces, but it’s that third piece that really adds that extra dash of style to your look. Use the army jacket as your “third piece” for an instantly stylish outfit.

In this next look, my tee and black skinnies were my first and second pieces. I added the army jacket as that key third piece that took the outfit to the next level.

Tip #3: Keep the color palette simple. Usually black and white combinations will work best with the army jacket.

Florals for Fall

Floral Top_Leggings_7

A classic floral top is a wardrobe must. I have owned this DVF top for about 2 years, and I continue finding ways to incorporate it into my outfits season after season. For the Fall season, it works wonderfully with leather details. Of course, leather is the “it” fabric for fall and it has a certain cool edginess to it. Pairing it with a floral top adds just the right amount of femininity to create a balanced and classic outfit.

If you happened to catch our previous post (see here), you know that I can’t pass up a pair of comfortable flats. These lace-up ballerinas are a perfect combination of style and comfort. They have been on repeat lately when I am running errands or shopping in the city.

Fall Transitions: Navy Crush

I cannot believe it has been over two weeks since our last post! Apologies for the radio silence, everybody. It has been a super-busy couple of weeks, but we are back! Today I am sharing a look I wore for a casual daytime outing with the family that included a little bit of shopping and a late lunch.

As Fall rolls around, my love for navy starts to manifest itself more and more in my outfit choices. It is such a rich, luxurious color and definitely a staple for the Fall season. I love using it as a base for the color palette of my Fall outfits and adding complimenting tones like red, burgundy, camel, blush (the list goes on and on…). For this outfit I’ve paired this dramatic maxi, shirt-dress with a red shoulder bag for just the right amount of contrast.

Color and fabric combination are key as we transition into Fall. For the early days of autumn when temperatures are still in the mid-20s, low 30s (ok, high 60s, low 70s for our American readers), I reach for light fabrics. What I love about this maxi dress is that it is made of silk, so it is actually pretty airy and can keep me cool throughout the day. So, while the color speaks to the season, the fabric makes it very practical when Fall isn’t quite Fall just yet. In cooler days, you can opt to wear this with booties and layer on a belted vest. Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_5   Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_2

White and Navy

White Buttondown_Navy Pants_8

There are very few pieces that I love more than the classic white button-down shirt. There is something about the crisp, clean look of a button-down that elevates an outfit to another level. You cannot own this in enough styles, ladies. I default to it time and again, whether for a serious office look or for a casual daytime look.

For this outfit, I paired one of my favorite white button-down shirts with loose navy trousers for an office-to-drinks look.

I went with a blush-colored shoes and bag combination, which keeps the outfit somewhat muted but still adds a touch of soft elegance to the look. I have loved the blush trend this year and I’ll definitely be looking for ways to incorporate it into my fall wardrobe.

Monthly Style Budget: September

While our love for fashion has no limits, our monthly budget for it unfortunately does! Hate to be a Debbie Downer on that one, but on the bright side, we strongly believe that you can be stylish at every budget. To that end, we are starting a monthly series where we gather must-have pieces based on a $500, $1,000, and $2,000 monthly budget!

Sometimes we get so overwhelmed with all the trends out there, it is difficult to clear out all the noise and focus on the key pieces that are worth the spend in the long run. Our goal is to call out staples and investment pieces that you can use throughout the season and even bring back year after year.

Naturally, our September suggestions are all about fall prep!

Details on the $500 Budget:

Neck Scarf: H&M | Pants: TopShop | Peplum Top: J. Crew |

Cross-body Bag: Rebecca Minkoff | Trench: Banana Republic

Details on the $1,000 Budget:

Moto Jacket: BlankNYC | Hat: Janessa Leone | Dress: A.L.C.

Sunglasses: Le Specs | Necklace: Vanessa Mooney | Booties: Tory Burch

Details on the $2,000 Budget:

LBD Refresh: The Slip Dress

Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_5

The slip dress has made quite a comeback this year, and we are loving it. Kate Moss originally made the trend popular in the 90s, and it has come back with even more momentum in the last few months. It is a tricky and daring piece for sure, but there are actually quite a few simple ways you can incorporate it into your every day wardrobe.

  1. You can throw a blazer or jacket over it, as seen here, for a sharp and clean look.
  2. You can pair it with a loose cardigan and booties for a more casual look. An example here and a variation of it here.
  3. You can wear it over a simple t-shirt, which might seem unusual at first, but check out some convincing examples here, here and here.
  4. You can let it shine in all its glory and simply pair it with low booties for a daytime look, or a minimalist high-heeled sandal for an evening look.

Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_2

For this particular look, I have gone with the fourth option. I added a neck scarf for an edgier look, which actually proved practical when it got slightly windy during the day.

Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_9  Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_7 Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_6  Slip Dress_Booties_How To Wear_4

Another reason I love the slip dress is that it is a great Summer to Autumn transition piece! The dress is great by itself for warm end-of-summer days, but it can also easily be combined with layering pieces as suggested above, for cooler Autumn days. Any piece with that kind of versatility is a winner in my book!
