Urban Vibes

We have visited LA several times in the past, but this year was the first that we actually made it to Downtown LA. We had a lovely lunch at Bottega Louie and made sure to take away some of their famous macaroons with us. They have a fantastic selection of deserts too, but we resisted the urge to pick up one of each! If you find yourself in DTLA, we highly recommend adding this to your itinerary.

Choices, Choices…

Let’s pick up where we left off, shall we?

It has been a while, but we are ready to come back and (hopefully) create more interesting content for you guys. Here’s an easy yet super cute outfit Genta wore at The Broad Museum in DTLA during her visit!

We put her next to these super-sized chairs as if she isn’t tiny enough already! 🙂

Lots has gone on during the past few months – between the two of us, we’ve travelled, started home construction, had kids compete in (and win!) tennis tournaments, changed jobs, gotten into accidents involving toes and broken glass (ugh!), and developed a serious obsession with Game of Thrones (only 2 more episodes left this season, say it isn’t so!). The months seem to have passed in a flash, with little to no time to document everything.

But everything is a choice, isn’t it? I was talking with a friend over dinner last night, a stay-at-home mom of 2 boys.  She talked about how she constantly finds herself having to choose between things that she feels she has to do, things that she would like to do, and things that if she doesn’t do will nag her with guilt. This is such a common theme with women. I kept thinking of that line from Titanic where Rose’s mother says to her, “We’re women, our choices are never easy.” Does anyone else remember that line? It’s interesting that it’s delivered by a character we don’t like in the movie, because it is a fact that women don’t really like to hear. We like to think that we are free, that we can forge our own path and pursue our ambitions, but it is never easy! For everything we do, we have to forgo something else that is probably just as important to us.

So I guess my point here is twofold. This blog is one of those choices for us – it’s an awesome creative outlet that we love, but unfortunately it gets pushed aside in the constant re-prioritization of things that demand our attention. Secondly, at the risk of sounding supremely cheesy, let’s be kind to each other! Everyone has given up something to be where they are, and only they know that struggle. Let’s interact and communicate from a point of understanding, rather than from a point of passing judgment.

Now that the mini therapy session is over, let’s shop the look! 🙂

LA Travel Diary: Newport Beach

If you guys are visiting LA and are looking to spend time by the ocean side, we would highly recommend Marriott’s Newport Coast Villas. We rented a 2-bedroom villa for our stay here, and it was just perfect for our family. Each villa comes with its own kitchen, a dining area, a living room and a bathroom for each bedroom, so we had plenty of space to all have breakfast together and for family game nights. Our favorite part by far were the balconies that opened up to stunning views of the Pacific Coast. This was the perfect spot to catch a California sunset, sipping wine and enjoying the crisp ocean breeze.

The resort was super family friendly, which worked out great for our group of ten. We would start the day with a game of tennis in the mornings, followed by some time in the pool. In the afternoons, we would play volleyball, basketball and miniature golf, and end the evening by roasting marshmallows by the large fire pits. The girls loved being outdoors and having the whole family take part in the activities.

During one of our days in the area, we took a short drive over to Balboa Island. It is a charming little island community, with cute boutiques, beautiful vacation homes, and our favorite feature – frozen bananas! Naturally, our first stop was Dad’s Original Balboa Bar where we picked out our favorite dips and toppings for our frozen bananas. After strolling through the little shops and boutiques, we made an obligatory stop at Starbucks to refuel, and continued our walk along the picturesque boardwalk that wraps around the island to burn off all the calories!!

The houses along the docks are so beautifully designed, we could have easily wondered here all day. Balboa Island boasts one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country, and looking at some of these houses that is not at all surprising. Although, we’re fairly certain that if they ever close down the frozen banana shops on the island, home values in the area will plummet…just saying.

LA Travel Diary: Warm Weather Vibes

img_2890-1

We started our LA getaway with a day in Manhattan Beach. It was late October, so we wanted to take advantage of the high temps and sunshine while we still could (although we later found out that there wouldn’t be a shortage of them!). It was a beautiful day to be at the beach. We relaxed on the sand, played some rounds of volleyball and chit-chatted while flipping through magazines.

When we took these photos, a strange midday fog descended over the water creating this ethereal background. It cleared out as quickly as it started, and we were back to clear skies and sunshine before we knew it.

img_2898-1

img_2833-1We love visiting Manhattan Beach when we are in LA. It has a great combination of a relaxing oceanside environment, beautiful views, and a cute downtown area with little pubs and boutiques that have a very European feel.

Also, meet Brock, the cutest little pug that we miss so much since we left LA!! He is the most laid back little dude and just so lovable. He was not terribly amused by the sand, but he was a trooper. He found a cool shady spot under the tent and laid there, perking up his head whenever people walked by or when he would catch a glimpse of his box of treats.

A few days into our vacation, we took a drive up to Santa Barbara and stayed at a charming little cottage near downtown. In the morning it seemed slightly too chilly to lay by the oceanside, so we strolled down State Street, grabbed some coffee and did a little bit of shopping. The weather warmed up later in the afternoon, so we gave in and went for ice cream at McConnell’s and enjoyed the sunshine.  In the afternoon, we returned to the cottage and did a quick barbecue in the backyard, watching over the kids as they splashed around in the jacuzzi. After having way more food than we’d like to admit, we headed inside for games with the family until we fell asleep one by one.

How to Style the Army Jacket

The army jacket may seem like a difficult piece to pull off. However, with some easy pointers in mind, it can become your new go-to for instantly cool casual outfits.

Tip #1: We like to think of the army jacket as an outfit “elevator” – it elevates an otherwise simple outfit to one with dimension and character. So, you want keep the rest of your look somewhat understated. Less is more with statement pieces.

In the following photos, I threw my army jacket over a black dress, paired with my favorite booties and bag.

Tip #2: Have you guys heard of the “third-piece” rule? It is a simple and effective approach to getting dressed. When putting an outfit together, try to incorporate a minimum of three pieces, not counting your shoes. We can usually easily think of two pieces, but it’s that third piece that really adds that extra dash of style to your look. Use the army jacket as your “third piece” for an instantly stylish outfit.

In this next look, my tee and black skinnies were my first and second pieces. I added the army jacket as that key third piece that took the outfit to the next level.

Tip #3: Keep the color palette simple. Usually black and white combinations will work best with the army jacket.

Florals for Fall

Floral Top_Leggings_7

A classic floral top is a wardrobe must. I have owned this DVF top for about 2 years, and I continue finding ways to incorporate it into my outfits season after season. For the Fall season, it works wonderfully with leather details. Of course, leather is the “it” fabric for fall and it has a certain cool edginess to it. Pairing it with a floral top adds just the right amount of femininity to create a balanced and classic outfit.

If you happened to catch our previous post (see here), you know that I can’t pass up a pair of comfortable flats. These lace-up ballerinas are a perfect combination of style and comfort. They have been on repeat lately when I am running errands or shopping in the city.

As we were driving through Romford the other day, we came across the cutest neighborhood with some stunning houses. Naturally, we had to stop and snap some pics. I love finding little pockets of inspiration around our town and these houses definitely served some serious #goals.

Fall Transitions: Navy Crush

Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_4

I cannot believe it has been over two weeks since our last post! Apologies for the radio silence, everybody. It has been a super-busy couple of weeks, but we are back! Today I am sharing a look I wore for a casual daytime outing with the family that included a little bit of shopping and a late lunch.

Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_3

As Fall rolls around, my love for navy starts to manifest itself more and more in my outfit choices. It is such a rich, luxurious color and definitely a staple for the Fall season. I love using it as a base for the color palette of my Fall outfits and adding complimenting tones like red, burgundy, camel, blush (the list goes on and on…). For this outfit I’ve paired this dramatic maxi, shirt-dress with a red shoulder bag for just the right amount of contrast.

Color and fabric combination are key as we transition into Fall. For the early days of autumn when temperatures are still in the mid-20s, low 30s (ok, high 60s, low 70s for our American readers), I reach for light fabrics. What I love about this maxi dress is that it is made of silk, so it is actually pretty airy and can keep me cool throughout the day. So, while the color speaks to the season, the fabric makes it very practical when Fall isn’t quite Fall just yet. In cooler days, you can opt to wear this with booties and layer on a belted vest. Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_5   Navy_Maxi_Dress_Fall_Outfit_2
